From Midnite Town,
Birmingham,
England
Where would we have heard you play?
The very first time I DJ’d was at “The
Ship Ashore” a pub in Birmingham city centre when I was just 17 yrs old
and I’ve been hooked ever since!
I have played at various places
including: 100 Club, The Rocket, Scenesville, Shake, The Dome (all in
London) Cleethorpes weekender, “Turning Your Heartbeat Up” weekender
(Nurnberg, Germany) “the Boiler” (Barcelona, Spain) amongst many, many
others.
I DJ regularly at “Shake Down” in
Stafford and I also co-promote “Midnite Town” all-nighter in Birmingham.
I play
50’s and 60’s R&B, Early Soul, Big Beat DooWop and Group Sound. I
occasionally play a little Northern Soul and Popcorn but it really
depends on the venue’s music policy.

Get to know her.............
1. If you could
have any record in the world, what would it be and why?
Roger Banks’ Bill Horton
acetate mainly because it’s the most gorgeous slice of Big City Soul
EVER but also because I can’t have it (that always makes something more
attractive!)
2. Who are your
biggest influences in DJ’ing and why?
When I played Northern Soul
my influences were John Weston and Andy Rix purely because they know how
to work a dance floor (I also love to hear Mark Stewart playing R&B for
this reason, so much so that we first met him because my partner and I
hunted him down to play at our wedding!)
For having huge b***ocks and
for being a great entertainer as well as a top class DJ, I really love
Jo Wallace.
For R&B, Popcorn etc I have
to say Roger Banks (who I call “Daddy” BTW) for helping to steer my
musical taste in new and exciting directions. Nashee, for being the
first person I met who loved Popcorn more than me and Bob “where does he
find em?” Morris just for being a legend!
Lastly but most importantly,
my husband for creating the monster that I am in the first place!!
3. If you could DJ
another style, other than that you are known for, what would it be?
I would go back to Northern
Soul if I could play at venues that love 60’s newies, forgotten oldies
and (shock horror!) cheap but fantastic records as long as they were all
true Northern (i.e. FAST!) Unfortunately those venues don’t exist at
the moment.
4. Why did you
become a DJ, rather than a collector?
I love to DJ but I am a
collector too. I collect a lot of records that I can’t actually play
out such as Beat Ballads and full-on Popcorn.
5. What’s the
“best” record you own?
“Leon Peterson – Now You’re
On Your Own – Skylark” Partly because it made me speechless the first
time I heard it and partly because it’s so rare that people used to tell
me that I’d never own a copy. Well now I do and the label is actually
signed by the man himself!
6. Where is your
favourite place to eat, and the best meal they serve?
I don’t really have a
favourite place to eat. Being female, food isn’t always my friend
(LOL!) If I’m hungry my choice would be something rich and French
7. Do you collect
anything else?
Mainly debts but also 1950’s
clothes
8. Favourite
drink?
Champagne, Rum & Coke, Beer,
Vodka…….
9. Most
embarrassing / funny moment whilst DJ’ing
I did a Sunday
afternoon spot in the main room at Cleethorpes weekender a few years ago
and decided to dress up in a ridiculous big hat, PVC trousers and huge
canary yellow platform heels (8” no less!) just as a bit of a laugh.
All was well until I stepped off the stage after playing my set and went
sprawling on my face! My silly hat rolled across the dancefloor and my
darling, caring husband carried on walking and left me there!! I
couldn’t get up for 10 minutes as I was laughing so much.
10. Favourite movie?
Blue Velvet, Night Of The
Hunter, The Girl Can’t Help It, Sin City, City Of God, Amelie, The
Wanderer, Pulp Fiction, The Shining plus LOADS more
